From a small idea on campus, FirstCut has grown into India’s largest student-run film festival. It provides young filmmakers with a space to share their work, connect with industry professionals, and reach audiences around the world. Run entirely by students, for students, FirstCut gives every story a chance to be seen and celebrated.

NON FICTION
Non-fiction films include documentaries, biographical portraits, investigative works, or essay films. At FirstCut, the non-fiction category provides filmmakers up to 40 minutes to capture truth-based stories whether shedding light on social issues, exploring cultural contexts, or offering personal perspectives grounded in reality.
Fiction films often explore themes of human emotion, relationships, or imagination, using elements like dialogue, mise-en-scène, and dramatic structure. At FirstCut, fiction shorts can be experimental or traditional, ranging from realistic portrayals of life to fantastical narratives, but must not exceed 20 minutes.
Animation films use frame-by-frame techniques to create the illusion of motion, employing styles such as hand-drawn, stop-motion, 2D digital, or 3D computer graphics. At FirstCut, animated films must stay within 10 minutes, demonstrating how unique visual language can captivate, entertain, or even educate.
ANIMATION
The Nano category challenges filmmakers to tell compelling stories within an ultra-short format of just 2 minutes. These films can belong to any genre, fiction, non-fiction, or animation but must rely on concise storytelling, striking visuals, and precise editing to create impact. Nano films highlight brevity as an art form, proving that a story doesn’t need to be long to be powerful.
